What is Y2K Fashion?

Y2K fashion is a nod to all the fashion trends – good and bad – during the late nineties and early noughties. The biggest trends that entered the new millennia were the velvet (velour) tracksuits worn by Hollywood celebs. Everyone from Paris Hilton to Britney Spears were rocking the trend by clothing brand Juicy Couture. There were also plenty of bedazzled denim jackets and chunky loafer shoes.

Why is Y2K fashion making a comeback?

Y2k fashion has made a huge comeback because we love all things nostalgia. As much as some of the ‘bedazzled’ outfits made us look a bit too sparkly there is something all of us millennials love about Y2K fashion. We just can’t get enough of the noughties nostalgia.

Baby Tees

Ah, the noughties. If you’re a millennial, you may just have fond fashion memories of Britney Spears being photographed sporting a wide range of cutesy baby tees. Shrunken to infinity and emblazoned with such iconic phrases as ‘’I am the American Dream’’, Britney’s t-shirts are etched into our minds forever. And for those who are brave enough to recreate the look in 2022.

Co-ords

Co-ords have been dropping in and out of fashion since way before the early 2000s. But imagine our delight to hear that quite possibly the easiest outfit to put together is back with a modern twist. Matchy – Matchy is the easiest

Shiny Materials

Reflecting the huge technological renaissance of the early 2000s, fashion futurism became a massive trend of the era. As of right now, we’re seeing designers embrace shiny materials with a contemporary spin. You won’t look like tin foil in these outfits.

Cropped Cardigans

Whilst the last decade gave us grandpa jumpers, the 2020s are bringing back cropped cardigans. If you need some inspo for styling your cardi, think Katie Holmes. With the high street providing a wide variety of colours and prints, we’re pretty excited for this revival. Staying warm and cosy can look stylish too.

Mini Skirts

With form-fitting fashion having a moment right now, it’s no surprise that our hemlines are also rising. The only wardrobe item tinier than our cardigans and baby tees in 2021 is our skirts. Opt for micro minis in pretty pastels and plaid to stay true to the decade. If you feel like minis are a no-no opt for a pair of sheer tights.

Mesh Tops

If there’s one item of clothing millennials and Gen Z’ers can agree on these days, it’s a mesh top. Coming in a wide variety of colours and prints, a sheer shirt is a great way to pull off Y2K style in a way that’s new and fresh. If you feel like going sheer this season, try wearing a mesh top over a long-line bralette or layering one under a grandpa vest for full-on noughties vibes.

Baguette Bag

Unsurprisingly, the first-ever ‘’it’’ bag has stood the test of time deservedly so. First popularised by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City series. These bags pretty much deserve their place in the Fashion Hall of Fame. It doesn’t have to break the bank to get on this style trend.

Chunky Loafers

Not just for school chunky loafers are comfy and practical. With the resurgence of 2000s fashion, we’re seeing a lot of new shoe trends. Our personal favourite is the perennial classic, the chunky loafer. Comfortable, office-appropriate, and stylish, you can never go wrong with adding a pair to your wardrobe!

It’s amazing how cyclical fashion really is and the trends that get picked up again. I’ve seen a lot of trends come back (some I’d rather not see, haha). It’s interesting to track what’s popular right now so this post was fun to read!
