How to protect your hair from the sun

When Summer comes round we all know the drill slap on the SPF to protect our skin from burning. But what about our hair? Uv rays cause hair to feel dry, damaged and frizzy so we need to give it a lot more time and attention in the hotter months. With the weather getting hotter I wanted to share my 5 essential tips on how to protect your hair from the sun.

1. Products

Just as you apply layers of beauty products onto your face you need to protect your hair from the sun. Don’t be afraid of layering products on your hair. When your hair is the dryer does not only needs more products to re-hydrate but it will absorb into your hair faster so you won’t be left with product overload!

Shampoo, Conditioner & Hair mask

I always recommend Kersatse Nutritive Irisome Range to my clients. Kérastase was the first haircare brand to look at haircare in a scientific view, this means that they were able to develop products especially for hair problems years before anyone else.

The Irisome range was developed from Iris Rhizome extract. The root of the iris flower that has the ability to nourish the hair and protect it from dryness. The range also has a key ingredients Botanical fatty acids which mimic the natural fibres in the hair and therefore enabling it to strengthen from the inside.

Pro tip – Try using a hair mask twice a week when the weathers hotter instead of once a week or leave in all day if you can.

Do you use serums?

I use to be afraid of them and I avoided them at all costs! My hair is naturally fine so, to be honest, I thought they’d weigh my hair down or make it look and feel greasy.

I was so wrong!

I discovered System Professional Luxe Oil. If you follow me on Instagram or read my blog post 4 Simple Ways to Tame Your Natural Curly Hair you will already know about my love for this product. It is hands down my number 1 favourite hair product ever.

I’ve been using this serum since 2013 just before its official launch. It has 3 key ingredients

  • Almond Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Argan oil

These 3 work together to repair your hair protect it from heat damage, UV protection and improves hair manageability.

Its lightweight formula is nourishing to your hair and will leave it looking glossy you can also use it in so many different ways.

  • Before applying the mask add a few drops of serum (4-5)  to your hair then the mask for a deeply nourishing treatment Leave for 10mins longer if you have the time.
  • Apply to wet hair so that it will give you heat protection.
  • Apply to dry hair to smooth and control  flyaways
  • Apply to dry hair before bed for an overnight treatment (shampoo & condition as normal the following morning).
  • Apply to your hair before getting in the sea or a chlorine-filled pool, this will create a protective barrier.

Sea Salt Spray

For the ultimate beach babe tousled waves spray a sea salt spray like Sachajuan Ocean Mist this award-winning product will give your hair volume, texture and leaves you with a matte finish.

Simply mist over your hair wet or dry scrunch in with hands and leave. The Sachajuan Volume Range is incredible the products smell like the ocean and are all sulphate and cruelty-free.

2. Olaplex

You may have heard of Olaplex or you’ve had it done in the salon as an add on or upgrade to your hair service. But do you know what it is? Let me explain.

Your hair is made up of bonds and when these bonds are broken/damaged they cause your hair to become dry, damaged and frizzy. These bonds can be broken down by brushing your hair too hard, over-drying or overuse of heated appliances and colouring.

Olaplex 3 step process that aims to repair and rebuild these bonds on a molecular level. Step 1 & 2 are for salon use only but step 3 is an at-home treatment that you can do once a week.

The Olaplex 3 will make a huge difference to your hair if it is damaged or even if you’re trying to grow it. You only need to use the treatment once a week it doesn’t need any more than that.

How to use Olaplex 3

  • Wet hair (it’s a pre-wash treatment so no need to shampoo).
  • Apply Olaplex 3 all over your hair
  • comb through with wide tooth comb
  • Leave for a minimum of 10 mins this allows the treatment to work you can leave it longer or overnight for maximum results (this is what I do).
  • Shampoo & Conditioner as normal.

They have recently brought out an entire Olaplex Haircare Range which is amazing especially for blondes or highly bleached hair like mine.

With continued use, your hair will be stronger, healthier, shiner and protected from any further damage.

I love Olaplex 3 and recommend it to everyone I know but I always make sure that they are aware it’s a repairing treatment, not a conditioning treatment you need to do 1 Olaplex treatment and 1 hair mask treatment every week.

Pro-tip – You can also use a dry shampoo not only will it mean you can wash & style your hairless but they will add body and texture to your hair.

3. Styling

Wash your hair less, well kind of!

The theory is that washing your hair often strips away your hair and scalps natural oils this is kind of true but not!

Yes, we have natural oils in our hair but those oils stay on the scalp they never penetrate down the hair shaft so those natural oils won’t moisture your dry ends.

Good quality products will put back everything your hair needs and more so as long as you use the right products wash is as often as you want.

However, when it comes to drying your hair try to avoid drying your hair as much as possible if you can tie your hair in a bun or plait and leave serums or masks in through the day then do it. The less heat styling tools on your hair the better.

Your hair is weaker when wet so use a Wet Brush to comb out any knots.

Pro tip –  Always tie hair back in a bun or top knot when going in seawater/pool.

4. Wear a Hat

Not just to look effortlessly chic in the sun a beautiful wide-brimmed straw hat or silky scarf will be the most stunning accessories to protect your hair from the sun exposure.

5. Don’t forget your scalp.

Have you ever burnt your scalp in the sun or on holiday? If not then believe me when I say OUCH! A few years ago I burnt my parting! I was so prepared with all my other hair products that I forgot about exposing my scalp to the sun!

Thankfully since using Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, my scalp has always been protected.

It’s like sunscreen for your hair and perfectly fine to spray all over your hair it’s water-resistant and will protect your hair for up to 16 hours.

No matter what you get up to always remember to protect your hair from the sun be safe, have fun and enjoy the wine.
