How to organise a wardrobe?

When you decide that it is time to organise your wardrobe set aside some time and make it your mission for the day. To organise a wardrobe, you first have to take a look at all of your clothes. What items have you not worn in over a year? Are there things that don’t fit you or your style anymore? If the answer is yes, then you can begin by donating or selling these items that you don’t need anymore.

Getting rid of clothes you don’t wear will help you declutter your wardrobe and become more aware of what is in it. Apart from freeing up space in a full wardrobe, this is also useful to help you become more mindful when shopping for new clothes.

How to Optimise Space

There are many creative ways to utilise the full capacity of the space in your closet. One way is to add storage under the clothes you hang. There is usually space that can be used under your hanging garments, which is perfect to store shoes, purses, or other accessories.

Keeping your wardrobe organised is a great step to feeling your best and looking your best. By finding creative ways to use space efficiently and investing in the right tools, picking an outfit can become quicker, easier, and more enjoyable.

We spoke to professional stylist and owner of Pret-a-Collection Katarina Petrikova for her best advice on how to organise a wardrobe.

12 Simple Ideas

  • The smaller wardrobe is easier to maintain.
  • Take out everything, to see what you have, the number of clothes that you own may surprise you.
  • Sort out clothes that you keep, toss, or donate. It might be an extra pile if you have no idea what to do with a specific item. Put it on the side to think about it.
  • Dust your wardrobe before you put the clothes back.
  • When you start putting your clothes back into the wardrobe, try to sort them out in seasons.
  • If you have a small wardrobe, hang trousers/skirts, tops/shirts/blouses, dresses, and outerwear.
  • Fold knitwear – it stretches if you hang it up. If you prefer you can fold your t-shirts as well.
  • Keep accessories on the shelves.
  • Hats are stored in storage boxes.
  • When out of the season use a coat cover your coat – to keep dust away.
  • Same with the bags, if you don’t use them, store them in a dust bag or at least stack them with paper to keep the shape.
  • When you see it, you’ll wear it.

Katarina also recommends that you “Iron your clothes and keep them in [stacked] piles. The wardrobe looks neat and tidy.” she explains “Steaming works as well. It looks nicer than just putting them one at the front and another at the further back.” she said.
