Fashion’s biggest night, the Oscars of the East Coast, otherwise known as The Met Gala 2022, finally returned on the First Monday of May after being cancelled in 2020 and held in September last year, glitzier and more glamorous than ever before.
Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, A-list celebrities walked the red carpet in celebration of the museum’s new exhibition, ‘’In America: An Anthology of Fashion’’, which serves as an exploration of American fashion during the 19th to mid-late 20th century.
There were special mentions to Andre Leon Talley and Virgil Abloh sadly both passed away in the past year.

History of The Met Gala
The Met Gala began as a dinner in 1948, founded by legendary fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert. But it was late US Vogue editor Diana Vreeland who turned it into the realm of celebrity and popular culture which remains under the current leadership of Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief and global chief content officer for Condé Nast, who has held the reins since 1995.
The red carpet fundraiser marks the opening of one of the Costume Institute’s exhibitions, which goes on to open to the public. On the night, guests dress according to the given theme. And amid all the glitz and glamour, the real aim is to secure funds for the museum. The event raises millions by selling tickets, which cost around $35,000 each, with tables ranging from $200,000 to $300,000.
The Met Gala 2022
This year, the Met Gala was hosted by Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Regina King. They were joined by honorary co-chairs Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, and Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, plus some of the world’s biggest celebrities.
The dress code was ‘’Gilded Glamour’’, a concept that leaves plenty of room for interpretation and pulls inspiration from New York’s Gilded Age when excess and grandiosity defined both the decades and the fashion. With specific instructions to wear white-tie attire—a very traditional formal version of evening dress, which can include floor-length ball gowns, black pants with matching jackets, or coats with tails that hit the back of the knee—guests on the Met Gala 2022 red carpet put their own spin on the splendour of the Gilded Age.
We saw bedazzled garments, intricate embroidery and gold layered on gold as guests interpreted the Gilded Glamour theme. Both men and women sported corsets, and with them came padded hips, dragging trains and puffy sleeves. Bringing it back to the exaggerated silhouette of the late 1800s. Sustainability also took centre stage, with multiple celebrities opting to wear vintage.
There was even a surprise proposal [on the stairs] to NYC cultural affairs commissioner Laurie Cumbo and with the perfect setting, of course, she said yes.

Best Dressed Met Gala 2022
The stars shone in their incredible outfits, but there was no denying that there were some clear standouts in terms of following the theme and the overall look. These are our picks for Best Dressed at the Met Gala 2022.
Blake Lively
Blake Lively’s Met Gala looks over the years have not disappointed. Now, from playing the queen of the Upper East Side on Gossip Girl, she has proven herself worthy of the title in the real world. With her appointment as co-chair of the Met Gala 2022. She wore an Atelier Versace rose gold gown, tied with a metallic sash and spangled with gold mosaic. Dangling Lorraine Schwartz emerald earrings hung from her ears, matching opera gloves extended above her elbows, and a tiara perched on her head.
As she continued her way up the steps, the metallic bow around her waist was undone, and it unravelled into a flowing skirt of effervescent aquamarine.
She explained that her dress was an ode to the architecture of New York City: its copper hue and silhouette reference the buildings on the city’s skyline, while its transformation into greenish-blue nods to the “patina“, or layer of oxidisation, they take on overtime. The dress’s flowing train is covered in hand-painted foil constellations that mimic the ceiling of Grand Central Station.

If anyone knows how to do the Met Gala, it’s Kim Kardashian. Stepping out with her new beau, Pete Davidson, for their first Met Gala, Kim arrived moments before the carpet was to end in the Jean Louis gown Marilyn Monroe wore in 1962 to serenade John F. Kennedy on his birthday.
A true ode to gilded American fashion and the late Marilyn Monroe herself. Kim looked incredible, finishing the look with perfectly coiffed, platinum blonde hair, diamond earrings and a white fur coat.
It was also the first time all the Kardashian/Jenner sisters were invited.

Just when we thought Lily James couldn’t get any better, she arrives at the Met Gala in a breath-taking cut-out Versace gown that screams the utmost glamour. The lilac gown featured sheer panelling, an asymmetric neckline and a thigh-high slit, alongside intricate bead detailing down the back. She completed the look with matching purple platform heels, wearing her hair slicked back to show off her dazzling earrings.

Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys proved she is still in an ‘Empire State of Mind’ as she glided down the red carpet in a shimmery black-and-silver gown by Ralph Lauren featuring a black cape, which was adorned with a glittering silhouette of the entire New York City skyline.
The star wore her hair in a sleek long braid with black and silver hairpieces heightening the do. She finished the look with long silver earrings and glossy makeup. On the carpet, she spoke of her love for the city. “We really wanted to bring New York to the gala,” she said, adding that she loved the dress because of its “artistic vibe.” Well Alicia, so did we.

Y2K meets the 1920s with Olivia Rodrigo’s stunning bedazzled, lilac Versace Gown. The designer dress featured dropped sleeves and waist, a high-slit, back cut-outs, and a bit of a train, giving us major old- Hollywood glamour vibes. The look was complete with mesh lilac gloves, De Beers jewels, matching platform heels, loose wavy hair with butterfly clips and a purple smoky eye, channelling her ethereal beauty.

For her first time at the Met Gala, Sabrina Carpenter wore a custom two-piece look designed by Julien Dossena at Paco Rabanne. The two-piece features a silver corseted brassière, as well as a gold voluminous skirt that’s embroidered with crystals from Maison Lesage. Combining American couture with something a bit more modern.
The sequins combined with rhinestones remain a Paco Rabanne signature, while the cut is reminiscent of old Hollywood. Sabrina got the theme and delivered beyond our wildest dreams, looking like a gilded goddess as she glided over the red carpet.

Dakota Johnson
Dakota Johnson always kills it on the red carpet, and at the 2022 Met Gala, she wowed again in a custom bedazzled Catsuit by Gucci. She made a dramatic entrance in the embellished sheer one-piece, which she teamed with a burgundy cape over the top. She finished off the look with black patent heels and glittering drop earrings.
With catsuits having a moment right now and having proven very successful in the Met Gala past (Bella Hadid), it’s no surprise that Dakota dipped her toe into the trend, providing a very modern take on this year’s gilded glamour theme.
