Just when we thought last year was the peak of great television, this year comes around with an impeccable line-up that’s already everything we could want and more. With that in mind, these are some of the best new TV shows to watch now. This is the year for gripping crime thrillers and political dramas, this year’s programming schedule promises to give us more of what we love. As well as some tear-jerkers and shocking true stories.

This summer inches ever closer so now is the perfect time to catch up on some of the best tv shows to watch, before your summer plans take over your life. As well as a host of book-to-TV adaptations and biographical documentaries hitting our screens, we will also see our favourites returning which we can look forward to.

1. Pam & Tommy 

The beach babe, The rockstar And the video changed everything. Pam & Tommy is a biographical drama miniseries chronicling the marriage between actress Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, played by Lily James and Sebastian Stan. The show focuses on the period their unauthorised sex tape was made public. 

The mini-series, now airing on Disney+, depicts the turbulent three-year marriage of the infamous couple. With particular emphasis on the theft and illegal distribution of a sex tape, the couple recorded privately during their honeymoon. As well as the psychological effects it had, particularly on Pamela Anderson.

Lily James’s performance is breathtaking, as well as her uncanny resemblance to the Baywatch star. The show perfectly highlights society’s corrupt conceptions of women and how they are so unjustly sexualised and judged, based on innocent acts of confidence and fighting for female equality and justice. As a female-led brand, we highly rate this series for its ability to change the female narrative and turn something that was once considered a scandal, into an inspiration. 

2. Our Father

If, like us, you can’t get enough of thrilling true crime documentaries at the moment, then prepare yourself for possibly one of the most shocking and crazy Netflix series to date. Our Father centres around the horrific actions of Donald Cline a once well-respected fertility doctor in Indianapolis who was discovered to have inseminated over 50 women with his own sperm without consent.

The documentary is set to unfold like a detective story, following one of Cline’s children as she begins to piece the shocking truth together. Using online DNA testing and ancestry sites and, eventually tracking down dozens of half-siblings, inevitably lead to a trail back to Donald Cline. We have a feeling this series will be stuck in everyone’s minds for months to come.

3. Bling Empire

We couldn’t write about the best upcoming TV shows and not mention Bling Empire. The ultra-glamorous, ultra-chic, and ultra-extra Netflix series returns. It’s predicted to be more glitz and glam than ever. Kevin Kreider’s friendship with Kane Lim is put to the test, we’ll see more of his romance with Kim Lee that was teased in the first season.

What kind of social warfare will Anna Shay and Christine Chiu get into next? After their infamous fallout over high-end diamonds last season, you know you’ll need a platter of hors d’oeuvres to snack on as you watch the drama go down.

Although Chèrie Chan and Jessey Lee previously announced their departure from the show, Season 2 welcomes two new cast members. Known for her unapologetic personality on E!’s Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, Dorothy Wang returns to reality TV in this latest season.

Also joining is Mimi Morris, a social media influencer and philanthropist. With a cast shakeup, you can expect more tense arguments, impeccable style and shots of Kreider’s abs when Bling Empire Season 2 drops on May 13.

4. The Time Traveller’s Wife 

Who needs summer love when we’ve got Audrey Niffenegger’s best-selling book adaptation, The Time Traveller’s Wife, hitting our screens? The HBO science-fiction romantic drama television series tells the story of Clare Abshire (Rose Leslie), an ordinary woman in a relationship with Henry DeTamble (Theo James).

Their loving relationship is complicated by the fact that Henry has an unusual genetic disorder that causes him to time travel at sudden intervals, resulting in him experiencing his romance with Clare out of order.

As Henry uses his time leaps to re-examine past traumas and outrun the forces chasing him, a hopeless Clare is forced to cope with his frequent absences. As if Theo James wasn’t enough, this series promises a whirlwind of emotions and drama as we watch Clare attempt to help Henry not only come back to her but navigate the traumatic and torturous days time keeps sending him back to which asks the question; can love to save us from ourselves? You will be able to find us lying in the sun with a tub of ice cream and a box of tissues, bawling over this series all summer long.

5. Conversations With Friends

We all know how a good Sally-Rooney-based BBC drama can have us gripped (Normal People) so we’re surely in for a veritable treat with Conversations With Friends. The novel was the author’s debut, and the adaptation will explore its unique depiction of love and relationships further. The 12-part series, which is primarily filmed in Northern Ireland, will likely closely follow the premise of the book.

It chronicles the angsty story of Dublin University students Frances and Bobbi, who are discovered by an older woman, Melissa, who is a journalist. Things start to get complicated as Frances develops a romantic connection with Melissa’s husband Nick and that typical Rooney-esque drama ensues. Make sure to have a box of tissues on-hand for we already know they will be needed. 

6. The Kardashians 

Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no helping keeping up with the Kardashians. Thankfully, their new Hulu show, The Kardashians, gives us the inside scoop on all the drama we’ve been missing. From Kim and Kanye’s divorce to Kourtney and Travis trying to have a baby, the show offers us an inside look into the lives of the most famous family in the world and their point of view on all the controversy and rumours that surround them.

7. The Girl From Plainville

How do you tell a sensational story without, well? Such was the issue for writers, executive producers, and co-showrunners Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus as they set out to make the Girl From Plainville. The eight-episode Hulu limited series is inspired by the shocking true story of Michelle Carter’s (Elle Fanning) unprecedented “texting-suicide” case that ignited a media firestorm.

Based on the Esquire article by Jesse Barron, the series explores Carter’s relationship with Conrad Roy III (Colton Ryan) and the events that led to his death and, later, her conviction of involuntary manslaughter. This has been one of the most highly anticipated true-crime documentaries since the court case back in 2017.

The first 6 episodes of the show raise some very interesting questions and discussions about free speech and mental health and elude to a very honest portrayal of the people involved and what they went through. People go through this on a day-to-day basis when tackling their mental health. Elle Fannin who is also an executive producer on the show is exceptional. It really makes you stop and think about how you never really know what someone is going through.

8. Bad Vegan

Possibly one of the most jaw-dropping series to date, Bad Vegan tells the story of Sarma Melngailis, former owner of the New York City vegan restaurant, Pure Food and Wine. Sarma met and married conman Anthony Strangis (who called himself Shane Fox), and she alleged that he coerced her into stealing money from her own restaurant and later going on the run from authorities.

The pair were ultimately charged with transferring over $1.6 million from the restaurant into their personal accounts. If you love a true-story series, especially one that will have you saying ‘Oh my God’ weeks after watching it, you have to watch this mesmerising and shocking show, streaming on Netflix.

9. White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch

‘’We go after the cool kids’’. After years of facing racism, discrimination and exclusion allegations, despite being one of the most profitable brands in the world, the truth behind one of the world’s leading retailers is finally revealed. Netflix’s ‘White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie and Fitch’ charts Abercrombie’s transformation from a forgotten 19th-century outdoors retailer to the epitome of late-’90s teen fashion.

Through interviews with former models, recruiters, store workers and executives, the 88-minute film suggests that appearing cool, attractive and White wasn’t just an exercise in branding: it was an active corporate strategy that came at the expense of non-White employees and consumers. A shocking look into the workings of pop culture and the retail industry, this film could not have come at a better time for society.
