The best products to help you with Perioral Dermatitis.
Have you have been getting mysterious red rashes around your mouth and no doctor in your local practice was able to identify it for quite a while? Something as extreme as that can damage anyone’s confidence in the process while having to constantly walk around with these strange red bumps constantly looking like you have just been to a strawberry eating contest or something.
What is Perioral Dermatitis?
What is this peculiar skin condition, you ask? It is called perioral dermatitis: the British Association of Dermatologists define it as a common skin condition that more commonly affects women aged 20 to 50 years old. It usually causes persistent redness or small bumps (papules) and sometimes pus containing spots (pustules).’ It is believed that the actual cause is not yet fully understood but can be induced by several reasons, such as steroid creams, makeup, or even toothpaste.

What causes it?
One of the most common factors is prolonged use of topical steroid creams and inhaled prescription steroid sprays used in the nose and the mouth. Overuse of heavy face creams and moisturizers is another common cause. Other causes include skin irritations, fluorinated toothpaste, and rosacea.

What can you do?
Once diagnosed, it might become quite hard to identify what cruelty-free products one can use for their skin since many people believe that no animal should be harmed during the testing process, and not wanting to use brands like Bioderma or La Roche Posay for that reason. Not only a dermatologically approved skincare regime for this condition will be included, but also some great products that could save your skin and, possibly, your confidence. So here are 3 main skincare tips and cruelty-free products to keep your perioral dermatitis at bay:
- Wash your face with micellar water only.
That’s right – do not wash your face with water! Tap water dries your skin out even more, therefore, only wash around your eyes with water in the mornings and clean the rest of your face with reusable pads and micellar water, twice a day or more. Stick to this and ditch any tonics or cleansing milks: La Roche – Posay Micellar Solution Cleanser is an absolute skin saviour.
- Moisturise, baby!
This will come as no shock to anyone – you must moisturise. At least twice a day. And if you can – more. You can also add in a hyaluronic acid serum, but this is not essential. The less ingredients there will be from the list known as the ‘dirty dozen’, the better: try ditch those parabens, BHA’s, PEGs and more. La Roche – Posay Effaclar MAT+

- BB Cream[Beauty Balm] is the way forward.
I know this might be a hard one for some, but heavier foundations clog up your pores making it harder for the skin to breathe: the more you cake on, the more likely you will have flare ups. A BB cream [beauty balm] or a CC cream [colour corrector] is a great alternative for those in need of some coverage topped with a nice bronzer to give you a slight sun kissed look. La Roche – Posay Hydreane BB Cream is the perfect set to get you started.
