Your minimalist home doesn’t have to be boring!

Creating your dream living space isn’t just about having a beautiful home. Your home should be your sanctuary, the place you got to relax and where you feel happiest. Your home should be filled with items that bring you joy as well as reflect your personality, however, filled does not necessarily mean full and cluttered with items that don’t serve any purpose. When it comes to a minimalist home, the saying ‘’less is more’’ is key. It is the most basic style with the purpose of being calming and bringing things back to basics to create a liveable and nurturing environment.

The saying ‘’clear space, clear mind’’ is crucial when thinking of creating a minimalist home as a cluttered space can often make one feel claustrophobic and disorganised. Having a minimalist home does not necessarily mean plain and boring white walls. There are many different minimalist home design techniques that you can get creative with and experiment with to make your home unique and reflect your style and character.

We have curated a list of tips and tricks to help you declutter your life and create your ideal minimalist home while still remaining chic and giving you enough creative freedom to experiment with your interior-design style and surround yourself with things that bring you joy.

Neutrals

An essential for minimalist design and the most basic form of minimalism comes from using a neutral colour palette, however, this is not just limited to white. Most minimalist homes feature white walls, however, you can experiment with colours like different shades of creams, pinks, yellows or any pastel colour that will still create a minimalist effect while giving you the opportunity to experiment with colour to give the room a warmer tone and more character.

Texture

Another great tip to add character, warmth and dimension to your minimalist interior is to play with different textures. This can be particularly chic if you choose to stick to a single colour scheme for your chosen space and it allows you to incorporate fun and interesting detail without having to worry about whether everything matches/goes together. You can mix textures in terms of furniture and the space, for example pairing faux fur with concrete or wood and marble, or you can opt to bring in textures with your décor for a more subtle playfulness.

Furniture

When opting for a minimalist design for your home, simplicity is the way forward in terms of your main pieces of furniture. Rather than overly complex shapes that can tend to bulk out a space, choose to opt for a clean-lined sofa and sleek, clean, and simple surfaces that reflect the light and make the room feel more spacious.

The modesty in simplicity also adds for easy elegance that can give you more freedom to experiment with different textures, colours and shapes in terms of décor to add warmth and character to the space.

This is particularly important if working with a smaller space in which case you might even make a few swaps to get the most out of every usable inch of the room without making it look cluttered. For example, you might opt for a settee or a set of loungers instead of a sofa or a nesting table instead of a bulky coffee table that takes up all of your floor space.

Storage

Although the number one rule of minimalism is that less is more, you’re still allowed to have a lot of stuff and shouldn’t have to throw any of it away just to achieve your dream minimalist interior, especially if those things bring you joy.

You can have the best of both worlds by investing in storage pieces such as floating shelves, stylish storage bins or furniture pieces with hidden storage that will allow you to keep a hold of your belongings without creating clutter or taking up floor space and thus maintaining the minimalist elegance you desire.

Storage solutions are also another way to add character and warmth to the space. For example, the stylish storage bin can be in different textures or colours or you can use the floating shelves to display other décor pieces or some of your favourite trinkets without being too complicated and while still blending harmoniously into the setting.

Plants

One of the easiest ways to add character and liven up a minimalist space is by incorporating greenery. Whether you choose to opt for a single large plant by a corner or a collection of cacti on a floating shelf, this simple design element will add a touch of colour and lightness to the space. Especially if you are working with a stark colour palette, plants will bring life back into the space and give it a natural freshness and calmness that we associate with being in nature.

If green is not your preferred colour of choice or you have a bad history with taking care of plants, dried plants and flowers give off the same effect as well as that beachy, California-cool minimalism that is just as chic. Pampas grass, wheat or branches are great options for experimenting with neutral hues and different textures to add character and uniqueness to the space. You can also add more of your own unique touch by opting for plant pots and vases of different shapes, sizes and colours.

Art

If you want to remain as minimalist as possible, you could keep the artwork monochromatic, such as black and white photography or art. Or, for a splash of colour and more of a statement, you could opt for a bright and colourful or abstract piece of art that you can use to implement your personality into the space as well as to help dictate the colours of the rest of your décor for cohesion.

If you would prefer to have a gallery wall, then you can still make it look chic and minimalist, as long as you stick to either a monochrome colour palette of colours that complement one another as well as the colours in the rest of the space. A simple, clean and well-organised gallery wall can also be chic and keep things interesting without creating visual chaos, as long as it is well-executed.

For an edgier and ultra-modern feel, you could also try leaning your artwork on the floor against the wall, as long as it looks like it’s supposed to be there and does not clutter the space and take away the minimalist elegance.

Candles

Don’t forget to add candles. Just because it’s a minimalist home doesn’t mean you can’t still have lots of candles in it. The White Company, Jo Malone and Yankee Candle do incredible scents that will give your home that little something extra. You want to create a home that you feel comfortable in and smells divine.
