Exclusive Interview with Louise Duncum, Personal Stylist & Colour Consultant

Most women know the frustration of standing in front of a wardrobe full of clothes and feeling like they have absolutely nothing to wear. But according to London-based personal stylist and colour consultant Louise Duncum, the problem isn’t a lack of clothing it’s a lack of clarity.

After spending almost a decade designing collections for major high street fashion brands, Louise founded Weiz Styles to help women build wardrobes that truly reflect who they are, their lifestyle and their goals. Now, from her luxury styling studio in Battersea, she helps clients transform not only the way they dress, but the way they feel about themselves.

In this exclusive interview, Louise shares the biggest shopping mistakes women make, why understanding your personal style matters more than following trends, and how colour analysis can completely change the way you look and feel. She also reveals the investment pieces worth spending money on and explains why finding your personal style can have a powerful impact on confidence, career and everyday life.

So many women have wardrobes full of clothes but still feel like they have “nothing to wear.” What’s usually going wrong?

This is such a common feeling and it can happen for a number of reasons. Often, women have outgrown their wardrobe as their lives have evolved, whether that’s becoming a mother, stepping into a new career, starting a business or simply becoming a different version of themselves.

I often see women buying clothes based on how they look on someone else, whether that’s an influencer, celebrity or friend. They then feel frustrated when the same item doesn’t work in quite the same way for them.

The reality is that what works for one woman won’t necessarily work for another. When you understand what suits your body shape, colouring, lifestyle and personality, shopping becomes so much easier and the feeling of having “nothing to wear” starts to disappear. That is why working with a stylist so you have clarity on what works for you is so transformational.

You worked as a clothing designer for high street brands before becoming a stylist. What insider fashion knowledge do you think everyday women should know when shopping?

This is such a great question! I think women need to give themselves a little more grace when shopping. One thing people often don’t realise is that fashion brands aren’t designing for every individual woman and all of her wonderfully unique nuances. They are designing for commercial success. That means using colours, shapes and trends that will appeal to the widest possible audience.

Just because something is trending doesn’t mean it will suit everyone, and that’s completely normal. The biggest thing I learned from working in the fashion industry is that understanding yourself is far more valuable than understanding trends. When you know what works for you, shopping becomes far more enjoyable, successful and intentional. When you start buying the trends that work for you and avoid those that don’t, you are on the right track.

Colour analysis has become hugely popular again. How can finding the right colours genuinely change the way someone looks and feels?

I absolutely love Colour Analysis and it’s one of my most popular services because the impact can be instantly transformational. The right colours can instantly make someone look healthier and brighter, often before they’ve even changed anything else. For me, the real magic happens in how it makes someone feel.

Colour analysis is the first step to give women style clarity. Suddenly they know which colours work for clothing, make-up and jewellery, but also how to combine colours successfully and shop with confidence. I also love introducing clients to colour psychology, so they can use and wear colour intentionally. For example, red can help create a feeling of confidence, whilst green is often associated with calmness and concentration.

Women are increasingly moving away from fast trends and towards more intentional wardrobes. What pieces do you think are truly worth investing in?

I think we’re seeing a real shift towards buying less but buying better, and I love that! The challenge with trend led shopping is that it often creates wardrobes full of clothes that don’t really work together. That’s usually when the “nothing to wear” feeling creeps in.

Before investing in any item, I always encourage women to invest in clarity first. Once you understand your style, lifestyle needs and what suits you, you can invest with confidence in pieces you’ll genuinely wear for years.

Personally, some of my favourite investment pieces are a great blazer, well fitting jeans, good quality basics, comfortable trainers and an easy to wear statement dress. However, the best investment pieces will always depend on the individual and their lifestyle. Another reason why working with a personal stylist is such a great investment, as it unlocks that clarity piece.

What’s the biggest transformation you see in clients once they start dressing in a way that genuinely reflects their personality, lifestyle and confidence?

The transformation goes far beyond clothing and I am grateful to facilitate that as I get to see women start showing up differently in numerous areas of their lives. They walk into rooms with more confidence, put themselves forward for opportunities, stop second guessing themselves and start feeling their best. They get their sparkle back!

On a practical level, they save time getting dressed because their wardrobe finally works for them rather than against them. Emotionally, the biggest change is how they feel about themselves and this is the key. Style is about feeling comfortable, confident and aligned with who you are. When that happens, it creates a ripple effect that impacts so many other areas of life.
