Interview with The Bridal Makeup Artist Jordan Pond

With a creative journey that began far from the makeup chair — initially training as a garden designer, Jordan Pond’s path into beauty was anything but conventional. 1. What first drew you to the world of bridal beauty, and how did you turn it into a career?

I had a somewhat non traditional entrance to the world of bridal beauty. I was actually training to be a garden designer when I decided to shift my career totally and train as a makeup artist. Once I became a mother my priority became creating a career I could develop around my children’s needs. I’ve always been into makeup on a personal level, always liked trying the latest products and different styles since I was a teen but went a more academic route at college and university! Needless to say I was pulled towards a creativity and passion based career!

I really had to make it work once I invested my time and money into all of the training I underwent. I was lucky enough to have a lot of friends get married when I first started my makeup business so this helped me build a great starter portfolio as well as develop my confidence with in the Wedding industry, which can be challenging at times. 

2. What’s your philosophy when it comes to creating the perfect bridal makeup look?

I think it’s all about balance. Obviously every so often I get a bride that asks me to transform them beyond all recognition, but generally it’s finding that equilibrium between looking magnificent and still feeling true to yourself. I focus a lot on asking questions and really getting to know my brides in order to create a bridal look that works for them. There is no ‘one size fits all’ in bridal makeup. 

3. Which timeless bridal beauty trends do you think will never go out of style?

I think a rosey toned sheer/satin lipstick will always be a staple of bridal makeup. I would say 90% of my brides have a lip shade on the same pantone of nudey pinks! It’s just flattering on everyone, think “your lips but better” kind if vibes. 2025 is going to be very skin focused, I’m seeing less and less of elaborate and glam eyeshadow looks in favour of a more soft and understated eye. Thanks in no small part to celebrity Bridal Influences like Sophia Richie and Hayley Beiber.

4. What’s your secret to creating looks that feel both flawless in photos and comfortable in person?

I like to say that it should be 1 or 2 steps outside your comfort zone , for longevity and photography purposes, but not 4 or 5. Having that time to get to know a bride at a trial really helps us to get it right together. I think of trials as a creative process that hinges on good communication. Makeup is so personal it’s the only way to get a good result!

5. Can you share your top five bridal beauty prep tips every bride should follow leading up to their wedding?

• First and foremost – be hydrated. You can use every luxury product in the world but if you are not drinking enough water your skin is not going to look good. It’s Boring advice but makes all the difference.
• SPF all the time. Sun damage- even very minor will compromise the texture of your skin once makeup is applied. Spray tans over sun beds ALWAYS.
• Don’t try anything to NEW. If you want to get facials done start getting them 6 months in advance. The same with aesthetics treatments etc. We don’t want to open ourselves up to possible reactions close to the day.

Sleep is also so important, its hard to clock a full 8 hours the night before your wedding but try and give yourselves the best chance by getting an early night if you can! I’ll come equipped with under eye masks and all my tricks of the trade but nothing tops a good night sleep. Add a gentle exfoliation to your skincare routine if you don’t already do so. Just gently 2 to 3 times a week will remove dead skin cells and reveal a brighter complexion.

6. How do you tailor your approach to suit more mature beauty needs and styles?

As someone previously married and divorced and keen to get married again… I fully embrace my second time and more mature brides. Mature skin doesn’t need anything different necessarily. Younger skin can sometimes have more texture than older skin! And mature skin challenges tend to be just that, texture! So I manage it in a way I would manage other problem areas on brides of any age group.

Intelligent application of the correct product. Heavy layers of makeup on top of texture is a recipe for disaster so I aim to build your looking using the least amount of product as possible. Skipping unnecessary primers, underpainting and multi tool application techniques are a few ways to do this.

7. What are your must-have luxury makeup products that you swear by for long-lasting, glowing wedding-day skin?

Hause Labs triclone foundation mixed with Charlotte tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter is my *chefs kiss* combo for a beautiful and radiant base. I also like to combine the Cahrlotte Tilbury Foundation with concealers to create a softer underye that reflects light! Great for hiding some of those more textured areas! 

8. You’re also a mother of three and a podcast host – has motherhood changed your perspective on beauty?

When we started our podcast “Bride or Die” with my co-host Andrea who is also a Mother in the wedding industry, it was very much a way to unload all of the wedding knowledge we have acquired of the years. Hopefully some of it is useful to brides! Even if a lot of it is just us cackling and saying outlandish opinions on weddings! Finding the time for a passion project is never easy when you are a mother, I’m sure most mothers will agree, but making time for things that give you a boost is always important.

I have a very supportive partner who is a great father and has always encouraged and supported me to pursue the things I love. Its important to have that support network, wether that be partners, friends or family.

I think motherhood changed my perspective in self care and its importance. Doing things to make you feel good about yourself is so vital to being a great, attentive and patient mother! And that opportunity is rarely handed to you … you have to demand it. You cannot pour from an empty cup!

9. What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

I love all of my brides and it’s always a little sad when the wedding is over as we build these mini friendships. Ultimately I get to be a part if a very intimate part of their wedding day which is incredible and I’m so grateful. I must say some of my favourite moments are working with Brides and Mothers of the Brides that are apprehensive makeup users .

Of course it presents challenges bit when you show someone themselves in the mirror at the end of a makeup application where you’ve really worked hard to keep it authentic to themselves, whilst highlighting their best features and maybe showing them themselves in a way they haven’t seen before. It’s wonderful. I love those moments. 

10 What are your makeup essentails to recreate a glowing look everyday?

Cream products are your friend here. We cant just add highlight at the end to get glowing results. Clever layering of cream bronzer and blushes on top of a sheer foundation will give you amazing results. But it’s ALL in that skin prep really. A hydrated, exfoliated and well moisturised base won’t let you down.

I love Embroylisse lait Creme concentrate as a moisturiser, Haus Labs Triclone foundation, Hourglass Cosmetic Concealer, Morphe Hot Shots Blush, Charlotte tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter in a deep shade for bronzer and the lighter shades as highlighter! Set with the powder version of each product to intensify but using just the creams is a great way to keep it subtle and glowy!
