Here are 10 questions with Katie Marks.
1 What was your day job before becoming a social media influencer
I worked in digital media and marketing for 11 years before I had Mia and loved it. I’ve also done consultancy work for brands to improve their social media presence which I also really enjoy. I’ve always been interested in marketing and social media and have known since school really, that it was the route I wanted to go down – I just didn’t realise this would end up being my journey! I feel incredibly grateful.
2 When did your content on social media begin to take off?
I started my account in June 2021 and it began as something I was just using to document my motherhood journey – it started taking off a year or so later when brands began approaching me to work together on campaigns.
3 How has social media changed your life?
It’s become my full time job which is just mind-blowing and still so crazy to me – I think it always will be. I’m able to be my own boss, work from home and work around my daughter which is freedom I never thought I’d have.
4 What made you choose ‘relatable mum’ life for your content creation?
As a new mum during lockdown, I felt like there were so many things I missed out on. Mia was 9 months old when lockdown started and there were a lot of milestones and things I didn’t get to do with friends until she was almost two. So I looked to social media for mums that I could relate to but found they were mostly all perfect accounts showing their aesthetic clean homes, amazing outfits and perfectly behaved kids.
I wanted to create a little corner of social media for the messy mum, the mum covered in the remnants of their kid’s breakfasts, the mums that are real and normal and trying to relate to others by trying to find their people – and just survive the hardest parts of being a parent. My reels are designed to make people laugh and make light of the hardest parts of motherhood as a team, together.
5 Where do you get your content creation ideas from?
Experience mostly! Every reel has been an inspiration from my life, whether it’s making fun of my husband, moaning about back-to-school germs, all the way to kids’ parties and the hell of planning them! There is a story behind them all which I think is why they perform so well and reach a wider audience.
6 What’s your favourite thing about being an influencer?
Connecting with other mums and making them feel less alone in motherhood. I have women I speak to daily who show me that I’ve created a community, and thinking back to those lockdown days when I felt quite alone and clueless, it makes me hopeful that maybe I can help another parent not feel that way.
7 Have your views on fashion changed since becoming a mum?
I’ve never really been a fashion-obsessed girly, I’ve always worn whatever makes me happy and that I like! These days it’s definitely comfort over style! Leggings, jumpers, and cosy knitwear are my new staples! Chasing your kid around a park calls for comfort over everything!
8 What are your favourite brands to shop for clothes?
For day-to-day pieces, H&M will forever have my heart, Zara, Asos – all the high street classics. I also love The White Company for pyjamas
9 Do you have a skincare routine and what products do you use?
I used to have an extensive skincare routine and would love to try new products and see how they worked with my skin. However, this time last year, I had an extremely severe allergic reaction to a viral skincare product that has completely changed my skin. It’s now super sensitive and reacts to almost everything I try – so my go-to brand is now Medik8. I filled the questionnaire out on their website and put in all the details about my skin issues. The products I was matched with have been amazing and I haven’t reacted to them at all.
My morning routine is cleaning my face with a hydrochloric acid spray (super gentle and antibacterial), I then follow with the Medik8 spf50 and the Inkey List water cream. In the evenings I double cleanse starting with the Medik8 cleansing oil (elite), then the Medik8 Clarifying foam. Then I use the Press & Clear exfoliator followed by the Clarity Peptidies serum and then the Crystal Retinal 3 – and then the night cream. Obsessed!
10. What is your typical day as a content creator like?
After school drop-off, I go home to film content for the following week. I like to work a week in advance so if something pops up that I need to do, I am ready with content for the day! I post 5 times per week so content planning and filming takes up a lot of my time. I then take time responding to comments and dm’s, then I focus on brand partnerships and content planning/filming for upcoming deadlines.
