Clear Out & Declutter
Starting off by having a clear-out and complete declutter of your kitchen cupboards can be a good motivator. This will get rid of any items that you don’t need. You may even find items that you forgot were there.
Starting with one section at a time can be easier. Take stock of each cupboard or area and check its components. For example, looking at what is in that section. How many of those items are needed? Do you use them very often? Is this taking up too much space?
These are useful questions to ask yourself when organising. Once you have removed the items that are no longer needed, you can then start to look at how much space you have. Often we can pile things up in the cupboard just to fill the space.
We spoke to Ingrid Jansen from the Declutter Hub and got her advice on how to declutter & organise a kitchen.
- Have all your heavy pots and pans right where you need them, adjacent to or underneath your cooker.
- Don’t mix food and non-food together. Pots in one area, cereals in another. It helps create a more hygienic workspace.
- Whilst lining up cans and bottles in your cupboard may seem over the top, it allows you to see exactly what you have and helps avoid overbuying.
- If you are planning a kitchen from scratch, incorporate plenty of space for recycling so it’s not littering up your kitchen floor.
- If you’re struggling for space, use your walls. Storage in-between your wall and base units can eradicate the need for a utensil drawer.
- If you’re a cook, those spice racks with space for six spices aren’t going to cut it. The best way to make your herbs and spices accessible is by using a cupboard. That way, you can see exactly what they are from above as well as at eye level.
- Shelves often adjust in modern kitchens so choose shelf heights that are suitable for your needs. You don’t want that oversize wine glass ending up with the dog food, so think about swapping the glass for a smaller one.
- Very few British kitchens have ample space. If you haven’t used that ice cream machine, rice cooker or juicer for 5 years, it’s time to say goodbye! The same goes for Tupperware which doesn’t have a top or bottom and chipped mugs and glasses.

Shelf Storage

There are different styles of shelf storage ones with removable shelves are best. This will help to keep the bottles standing. You can even add smaller storage tubs to place items, such as wipes or sponges in one place.
