Sabrina The Teenage Witch Vibes.

Forget everything you think you know about the 90s Sabrina; The Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart and the typical all American happy smiley cast. This version of the story is absolutely nothing like that so don’t confuse this story with that of its predecessor.

In part 1 of this 4 part series, we are introduced to Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), who is half-witch half-mortal. On the cusp of her 16th birthday and her notorious Dark Baptism. She is struggling with the ultimatum of signing her name into the Book of the Beast (committing to be a full-time witch and leaving everything she knows from her mortal life behind.)

She is left being pulled between two worlds: mortal teen life with her boyfriend Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch), and her friends Roz (Jaz Sinclair)and Susie (Lachlan Watson) or following in her family’s legacy, with the Church of Night. This coming of age story has exactly what is needed: a female lead who is unapologetically strong-willed.

Based on the Archie Comics of the same name, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina focuses on the darker side of witchcraft and the occult. From storylines about demonic possession, witch hunters and the Dark Lord, the show oozes gothic semblances with close reference to cult classics like Dracula.

Describing the show in an interview with Vanity Fair creator of the show Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was quoted saying “As the season goes on the horror gets deeper and deeper, but I’ve never been into exploitative horror or torture horror, so it’s always been more psychological and classical.”

It is not all brand new though, we still get to see some of the classic characters from the original series such as Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Aunt Zelda Spellman (Miranda Otto) as dark reimaginings of their former selves. Trust us when we say we mean dark, their love-hate relationship takes a turn when Hilda steps on Zelda’s toes, the only solution- kills her.

We do have a few new editions to the show like Ambrose Spellman (Chance Perdomo), Sabrina’s comedic cousin, and Nicholas Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood) and even the dishonest Madam Satan/Mary Wardwell (Michelle Gomez). Who all bring their own Identities to the show.

The effects in a series are stunning, and with a show about magic you know there will be plenty. CAOS packs a punch with some of the visuals it shows us on screen. There is a scene from the first episode of part 1 where Sabrina’s mum’s wedding dress changes from white to black. The gradual change is visually stunning and entangles the idea of her innocence being lost after signing her name away.

The set of the show is another plus. The set has a vintage feel, the aesthetic being gothic and 1960s vibes including the styling of the costumes, we see those peter pan collars.

The diversity of the show with its characters is phenomenal a nonbinary character in Susie, polyamorous relationships and some major queer representations in character like Ambrose Spellman who is pansexual.

Not only do we have a colossal amount of representation from the characters but this show continues to explore some really strong themes like feminism/ women empowerment, toxic masculinity, healthy masculinity, gender norms and LGBTQ+.

Sadly Netflix cancelled COAS after its 4th season, it’s the perfect treat to sink your teeth into this Halloween weekend and might even make you afraid of the dark!
