Fashion expert Rebecca Ryder-Caddy gives her insight into the Prada Versace aquisitian
In a move that signals one of the most significant power shifts in luxury fashion this decade, Prada has officially completed its £1.04 billion purchase of Versace, bringing two of Italy’s most influential designer houses under one corporate roof. While the sale price is notably lower than the figure paid by Capri Holdings in 2018, it reflects the reality of slowing sales at Versace and a strategic opportunity for Prada to modernise, stabilise, and elevate a brand with extraordinary cultural weight.
With the acquisition now final, industry attention turns to one question: what future does Prada envision for Versace, and how might this reshape the global luxury landscape?
To unpack the significance of this moment, CSC spoke exclusively with Coventry University fashion expert Rebecca Ryder-Caddy. Her analysis offers rare insight into Versace’s legacy, its cultural influence, and how Prada may guide the house into its next chapter.”

Why does Versace hold such an important place in fashion, and how has its history shaped the industry we know today?
“Versace is an iconic brand, a true stalwart of the glamorous image of fashion which remains today. The brand was founded in 1978 by Gianni Versace in Milan. During the 1980s and 1990s, the brand became synonymous with glamour and fantasy escapism. They embraced colour, pattern, form fitting silhouettes and contemporary new-money glamour. They were integral to the invention of the Supermodel: the iconic muses who represented untouchable figures that embodied the escape from world affairs and events.
“During the 1990s, the brand was countered by the anti-fashion movement, which tried to foreground how people felt in times of change, upheaval and challenge; so there were two very different approaches to fashion happening simultaneously, one led by Versace in Milan and the other by Martin Margiela and the Antwerp Six.
“The brand expanded beyond fashion products, offering hotels and interior design options. Founder, Gianni Versace was tragically shot dead at his home in Miami in 1997, leading to his sister Donatella taking over the brand and showing her first catwalk collection in October of the same year. Since then, the brand has continued to make waves- notably being credited with causing the invention of Google Images following the wealth of searches for their iconic “jungle dress” worn by Jennifer Lopez in 2000.
“Versace spent time in the ownership of Group Michael Kors from 2018, before moving to the Capri Holdings umbrella of houses in 2019. In 2023, Capri Holdings was purchased by the Tapestry Group, but even before this acquisition the Prada group were aiming to take ownership of the Versace brand. In March of 2025, Donatella stepped down as Creative Chief, and Dario Vitale (formerly of Miu Liu, also part of the Prada Group) took over her position before the Prada Group completed their purchase of the brand in December 2025.
“Versace remain an iconic brand with a legacy in European and US fashion and impact from diffusion and high street collaborations, all the way up to luxury couture market levels.”

How is Versace likely to evolve creatively and commercially now that it’s part of the Prada Group?
“It’s important to remember that The Prada Group includes the Prada brand but also includes other luxury houses including Miu Miu, Church’s, Lina Rossa and more. Adding Versace to the group helps ensure that Italian luxury fashion houses are supported and united by working under the same corporate umbrella.
“The Prada Group has clear focus on raising profile and visibility of their brands internationally and also commits to ethical and sustainable advancements with focus on three key areas: planet, people and culture. The future of the Versace brand will be interested to watch evolve, but the commitment to retaining their image and adapting to a changing world appears to be the focus of the Prada Group’s intent.”
A New Era for an Iconic House
Versace’s legacy is undeniable — a house that defined glamour, invented the Supermodel era, and left an imprint on culture that few brands can match. From Gianni’s bold vision to Donatella’s pop-culture reign, its influence has stretched from couture runways to the high street.
With Prada now at the helm, the brand enters a new phase: one rooted in stability, global strategy, and a more future-focused approach. What matters most is that Prada appears committed to preserving Versace’s iconic identity while guiding it into a modern, more sustainable era.
At CSC, we believe this partnership has the potential to revive Versace’s relevance for a new generation — keeping the glamour, sharpening the vision, and bringing two Italian powerhouses into powerful alignment.
