In this exclusive 10 questions with interview Raishma Islam discusses style, storytelling, and what’s next for the globally loved label.
1. What inspired you to launch a ready-to-wear collection, and how do you translate couture elements into accessible fashion?
My roots are in couture, and that world taught me the value of detail, fit, and craftsmanship. But I also recognised a growing desire from women for pieces that carried that same elegance, but with the practicality and ease of ready-to-wear. I wanted to democratise couture – take those intricate embellishments, luxe fabrics, and flattering silhouettes, and make them more accessible for everyday glamour and occasion wear.
2. How do you balance modern style with timeless elegance in each collection?
It’s always about that balance and respecting classic tailoring and silhouettes, while adding modernity through prints, vibrant colours, and subtle updates in detailing. A beautiful dress should make a woman feel like the best version of herself, without feeling like she’s trying too hard. I’m drawn to styles that transcend trends but still feel relevant.
3. From Princess Beatrice to Little Mix, your creations have been worn by some incredible women. What does it mean to you to see your work embraced globally?
It’s incredibly humbling. As a designer, seeing women from all walks of life, from royalty to pop culture wearing my pieces, it is the greatest reward. It tells me the designs are connecting emotionally, not just aesthetically. I always say, the magic happens when someone wears the piece and feels confident, powerful, and beautiful.
4. What’s your design philosophy when it comes to comfort and confidence?
Comfort is key. I design with real women in mind, I want the customer to be able to move, dance, and enjoy an event without adjusting the dress all evening. Fabrics, fit, and flow all matter. For me, confidence is the ultimate accessory and comfort is where that begins.
5. What are the standout pieces from your current collection?
This season, we have introduced printed silk dresses that are perfect for both day events and elegant evenings. They’re light, flattering, and full of personality. Our embellished kaftans and wrap dresses are also versatile heroes — wear them on holiday, to a wedding, or a special dinner. They do the hard work for you.
6. How do you design for diversity while maintaining a strong, cohesive brand identity?
Inclusivity is at the heart of what we do. I believe elegance isn’t defined by size or age — it’s a feeling. Our modest silhouettes and versatile fits appeal to a broad spectrum of women, and that’s very intentional. Whether you’re 25 or 65, curvy or petite, from London or Dubai, I want you to find something that makes you feel seen and celebrated.
7. Can you tell us more about your creative process, from inspiration to final embellishment?
It always starts with a mood — sometimes it’s travel, sometimes art, architecture, or heritage embroidery from South Asia. I’ll sketch, refine the silhouette, and then work closely with our team of artisans to bring the hand embellishments to life. Every bead, every thread is placed with care. It’s time-consuming, but that attention to detail is what makes each piece special.
8. How has showing at Couture Fashion Week in Paris influenced your brand?
Paris was a pivotal moment for us. It reminded me of the importance of storytelling through fashion — not just making beautiful clothes but crafting a narrative. It’s encouraged me to elevate even our most accessible collections with a sense of drama and sophistication. Every collection now carries a little of that couture magic.
9. What styling tips would you give to women for special occasions?
Start with confidence — wear the print, don’t let it wear you. Keep accessories minimal and let the outfit shine. Balance a vibrant dress with a neutral heel or clutch, or if you’re wearing something printed, keep hair and makeup clean and classic. And above all, choose pieces that make you feel amazing — that’s always the best look.
10. What’s next for Raishma the label any exciting launches we should be looking forward to in 2025?
We’re so excited about 2025 — it marks an important step in our global expansion. We’ve just launched a printed silk capsule in Selfridges, and we’re developing new sustainable pieces that blend modesty with modernity. There are also whispers of a beautiful destination collaboration… so watch this space!
