Paris Fashion Week SS 2023

A look at Paris Fashion Week SS23 with huge designer brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Dior. What is showing at Paris fashion week? The collections being shown are spring/ summer 2023 collections from huge designers, as well as new and upcoming designers.

Opening Paris Fashion Week SS23

This year many designers had thought about who would be walking down the catwalk as many wanted to make statements through casting. Weinsanto included many designer peers as well as contestants from Drag Race France. The designer’s collection has been described as campy and sometimes kinky, as most models had a lot of skin left exposed and wore ‘body stockings’ with embroidery swirling over them.

Paris fashion week will see collections from Benjamin Benmoyal, CFCL (Clothing For Contemporary Life), Maitrepierre and Vaquera. A solid start to the week.

What’s next for Paris Fashion Week SS23?

Designers such as Botter, Didu, and Mame Kurogouchi – to name a few. Also big names Christian Dior and Saint Laurant. Christian Dior was one of many favourites. The collection was inspired by Catherine de Medici (Queen of France 1549 – 1559) and is historically infused as well as exploring baroque craft. Baroque is a style of art, that often means dramatisation and exaggerated motion.

The inspiration is evident in this collection via the use of lace and the use of the colours white and black. At the time of Catherine’s reign, she wore black as a sign of power. Inspiration was also seen in accessories such as shoes. The queen often wore platform shoes to come across as taller and therefore more important. Chiuri – the creative director for Dior used this show as an opportunity to promote the work of other creatives such as Eva Jospin.

Wednesday

Another strong run of names. Paul Smith, then Courrege’s show. Courreges’ show is inspired by ‘the morning after a beach rave’ and used the set to help enhance the story, creating a sand hourglass in the centre. Nicolas Di Felice used a vintage scuba jacket from his archive to create a leather jacket – using the styling lines to break away from a ‘normal’ leather jacket look. Di Felice also used unconventional materials such as silicone to make some garments, such as the ‘coral’ dress.

Balmain is a brand that has been around since 2011, with Oliver Rousteing as creative director. Oliver Rousteing tries to make his collections as sustainable as possible. He stated he uses fabrics made from materials such as paper, banana and wicker – wherever possible. The Balmain show closed with Cher wearing a spandex bodysuit, which had sharp shoulder pads, plunging necklines and a marble print, radiating power with age.

Thursday

Rick Owens and Off-White were the two most popular names shown on Thursday. So let’s focus on some designers that maybe not everyone has heard of, such as Schiaparelli. For those who don’t know, Schiaparelli was a fashion designer from an Italian aristocratic background. She created the house of Schiaparelli in Paris in 1927, which she managed until the 1950s. Starting with knitwear, Schiaparelli’s designs celebrated Surrealism and eccentric fashion.

Her spring/ summer 2023 collection was heavily revolving around tailoring. Daniel Roseberry took inspiration from Elsa Schiaparelli’s skeleton dress suit from a very early collection. Roseberry explains his design choices are extraordinary and luxurious because more people will be inclined to buy them.

Friday

Huge designers such as Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Victoria Beckham showed their Spring Summer 2023 collections this Friday. Yohji Yamamoto is always an interesting designer to look into, as he uses texture to create interesting garments rather than flat fabrics with many colours.

In this collection, Yamamoto tried to step away slightly from his all-black collections. Introducing deep blue, Ivory, and grey. He however did use his staples of textures, detailing and layering to build up the monochrome looks. Yohji stated his reasoning for this was to try new colours and new inspiration. Stating it was a very joyful collection to make – but equally dangerous to stray away from an image that everyone is used to.

Paris Fashion Week SS23: The weekend

Over the weekend and coming into the start of next week, Paris fashion week has many more exciting shows. With Junya Watanabe opening on Saturday, Vivienne Westwood also made an appearance and closed with Ann Demeulemeester.

Sunday’s shows include the likes of Balenciaga, Givenchy and Valentino. Monday brings Stella McCartney amongst other designers.
