How to Grow Hair Long
Growing long, healthy hair has always been a bit of a personal mission. I’ve never had the patience for regular trims, and truthfully, I wanted to prove that I could grow my hair without cutting it every six weeks like everyone recommends.
So I set out to do it my way with zero scissors involved and a heavy focus on what I put on my hair and into my body. Spoiler: It worked. My hair is now longer, stronger, and healthier than ever before. Here’s exactly how to grow hair long —no salon visits required.
“If you’ve been told you have to cut your hair to grow it—consider this proof that there’s another way.” – Charlotte ‘Lottie’ James, Beauty Editor

1. I Used Minoxidil
Let’s start with the thing that made the biggest difference: minoxidil. You may of heard heard of minoxidil for men’s hair loss, but this little bottle has become a staple in my routine. I used a Minoxidil 5% & Sons Hair Growth Shampoo, applied it to my scalp once a day, and was consistent. Within 3-4 months, I noticed new baby hairs sprouting around my hairline and a visible increase in overall thickness. It’s not an overnight miracle, but it’s a science-backed treatment that absolutely works when you commit.
Tip: If you’re worried about irritation or build-up, apply it at night and wash your hair the next morning. I didn’t experience shedding, but that’s a normal part of the process for some people—stick with it!
2. Biotin Became My Non-Negotiable Supplement
There’s a lot of noise around hair supplements, but biotin has genuinely helped me. I take a high-strength 10,000 mcg biotin supplement daily, and over time I noticed not only faster hair growth but also stronger nails and clearer skin. The key, again, is consistency. This isn’t something you take once or twice a week—it’s a long game.
3. I Switched to Sulphate-Free Everything
I ditched sulphates and silicones completely. That meant finding shampoos and conditioners that were gentle and nourishing rather than stripping. My hair responded almost immediately—less dryness, fewer tangles, and a natural shine I’d been missing for years.
Favourites I swear by:
- Olaplex No.4 & No.5 – weekly washes
- Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Mask – deep hydration
- Vegamour GRO Shampoo + Conditioner – a plant-based boost

4. Weekly Scalp Massage Changed Everything
This tip is free and weirdly effective. I spent 5 minutes, 3–4 times a week, massaging my scalp with either my fingertips or a silicone scalp brush. It boosts circulation and helps products like minoxidil and oils absorb better. It’s also incredibly relaxing—think of it as self-care that stimulates hair growth.
5. I Treated My Hair Like Silk
Once I stopped treating my hair like it was indestructible, it stopped breaking. Hair that isn’t breaking off is automatically growing longer. It’s really that simple.
- Switching to a silk pillowcase
- Using a wide-tooth comb instead of brushing wet hair
- Wearing loose styles—no tight buns or high ponytails pulling at the root
- Microfibre towel wraps instead of rough towel drying
6. Oils Were My Secret Weapon
Hair oiling became a weekly ritual. I used two serums; the Champo Growth Serum and Morrocan Oil Treatment. I applied the Champo serum to my scalp and the morroccan oil to the ends before bed. Not only did my hair grow faster, but it looked healthier—glossier, less frizzy, and more resilient.
Growing my hair long didn’t require expensive salon visits or monthly trims—it required patience, consistency, and a real commitment to treating my hair better from root to tip. Between minoxidil, biotin, and a serious upgrade to my haircare routine, I’m finally at the length and thickness I always dreamed of—and my ends are still healthy.
