Expensive Hair is the new hair colour trend for 2023

Shine and gloss are definitely key to this season’s health and wealth hair trends. With all expensive hair colours, it is also important to find a stylist that will consider skin shade, eye colour and tones. It is key to discuss the depth and width of hair colour to be applied. ‘Expensive hair’ can be created in all shades from Nectar Blonde and Louis Vuitton Colour to Off Black. We take a look at all the different ways you can get this hair trend from the professionals that coined the term.

Expensive Brunette Hair

The headlines were images of model Hailey Beiber debuting darker hair which the internet coined as “expensive brunette”. The colour was characterised by multiple shades and tones of deep brown up to the dark blonde.

This brunette look is the designer version of the classic brunette and the trend continues to dominate in 2023. For many years blondes have enjoyed beautiful blends of light tones, and now we are seeing brunettes wanting the same.

Achieving that expensive luxurious feel means focusing on ‘dimension, shine and hair health’. Just as with blonde hair, there are many shades of brunette.

Liam Curran, a London based hairstylist is famed for creating red carpet effortless looks for a huge celebrity clientele. He offers a very personal service where ‘clients are able to have colours that are bespoke’ and he sites the rise of ‘Balayage’, the ‘change in hair colour techniques’ and ‘post lockdown trends’ as contributing to demand low maintenance styles with an expensive feel.

If you’re interested in trying out the expensive brunette colour, explore dimension, high shine, depth, intermixed tones, and custom blends with your stylist.

Rich chocolate, coppers, warm shades of gold and honey are all colours to consider’, Curran advises. He states that ‘it is not an all-over colour and definitely not something you can achieve with a box dye’.  ‘Expensive’ is a professional style so it is important to have a consultation before diving in.

Expensive Hair – Louis Vuitton Hair Color

A continuation of the ‘expensive brunette’ trend, Louis Vuitton brown is a specific shade rather than a colour texture pattern making an entrance this year. Think of the colour of a vintage leather Louis Vuitton handbag – a gorgeous rich tan colour that’s not too pale but not heavy or dark either.

A great colouring for a variety of skin tones due to its medium depth. But again it should be kept healthy and flowing with a shine to show the shade off at its best. Beyonce has hit the headlines for sporting this stunning look and what a look it is.  Gorgeous toffee tones make this a striking brunette look.

Tom Smith an international colour director at Evo hair describes this look as

A gorgeous rich tan, not too pale, but not heavy or dark either. This shade suits a variety of skin tones due to its medium depth and should be worn with healthy flowing hair that shines to best show the shade off.”

Expensive Hair – Nectar Blonde

If you want to go a little lighter then ‘Nectar Blonde’ is a honey blonde that oozes wealth with high shine. This glossy look contains a yellow gold tone similar to ancient ‘Egyptian’ gold. We are not talking brassy yellow here.  Gloss is extremely important – think of Adele at the many award ceremonies! Conditioning treatments are key to achieving this level of shine. Blow drying smoothly and using products that reflect the light are the tips to follow if you want to maintain this expensive look.

Expensive Hair – Mahogany Blonde

Another expensive colouration coming through for 2023 is ‘Mahogany blonde’. Sydney Sweeney and Kendall Jenner are but a few of the major celebrities sporting this new look.

In London, Tom Smith describes this look as a warm and cool-natured colouring which makes it flattering for many skin tones, making it a great way to try out a copper shade for the first time.

Although the colour sits in the copper and red colour family, it is still very close to blonde. This shade is described as ‘earthier’ than a strawberry blonde. The key difference is the copper and gold element with a hint of rose.  ‘Soft rose copper’ is a colour to ask for at your hairdressers. The result is very sensual and feminine.

Mahogany blond is very specific in colour, so don’t forget to ask your hairstylist for a take-home conditioner. Evo Fab Pro is a good recommendation.  Glossing treatments are advised to keep the depth of colour looking luxurious.

Expensive Hair – Off Black

This ‘almost black’ look is always surprising as it dazzles us with shades of black and then brown according to light angles. Megan Fox has certainly made lots of surprise appearances, turning heads with this Off Black hair colour.

Tom Smith explains :

Cooler shades always appear darker than warmer shades, and so while very dark, this hair colour is actually the darkest shade of brown with a very cool, ashy undertone, giving the appearance of black to the untrained eye. This stops the shade looking overly harsh or draining but retains the striking, inky appearance of black hair.

When deciding to go for the expensive look. Remember to take photographs from all angles to show your stylist. And maintenance means asking hairdressers for that ever-important take-home conditioning products.
