Dame Jilly Cooper Dies

It’s a sad day for British literature. Dame Jilly Cooper has died at the age of 88 following a fall at her home. Tatler reported: the writer’s agent confirmed the news in a statement, with her children later paying tribute to their mother. ‘Mum was the shining light in all of our lives,’ the message read, ‘Her love for all of her family and friends knew no bounds.

‘Her unexpected death has come as a complete shock. We are so proud of everything she achieved in her life and can’t begin to imagine life without her infectious smile and laughter all around us.’

Dame Jilly Cooper was best known for her brilliant, mischievous mind behind RidersRivals, and the entire Rutshire Chronicles.

A National Treasure With a Wild Sense of Fun

Born Jill Sallitt in Hornchurch, Essex, in 1937, Jilly Cooper began her career in journalism before becoming one of Britain’s most popular — and most delightfully scandalous — novelists. Her sharp wit, warmth, and unapologetic love for glamour and gossip earned her millions of fans around the world.

Her literary breakthrough came in 1985 with Riders, the blockbuster that introduced readers to Rupert Campbell-Black — the charismatic, womanising showjumper who would come to define her Rutshire Chronicles. Her novels were cheeky, romantic, and unabashedly posh — full of country houses, champagne, and complicated affairs — a snapshot of British society at its most indulgent.

Over her career, Cooper sold more than 11 million books in the UK and was appointed a Dame in 2016 for her services to literature and charity.

Family, Marriage, and a Life of Love

Jilly married newspaper editor Leo Cooper in 1961, a union that lasted more than 50 years until his death in 2013. Their relationship, full of charm, wit, and the occasional scandal, mirrored the spirited love stories she so often wrote about.

She is survived by her two children, Felix and Emily, and her sister, Sue Pollock, to whom she was deeply close.

From Riders to Rivals — Her Stories Endure

Even in her later years, Cooper’s zest for life never dimmed. She delighted fans by serving as executive producer on Disney+’s 2024 adaptation of Rivals, introducing her iconic characters to a new generation.

Tributes have poured in from fellow authors, fans, and public figures, celebrating Cooper’s contribution to modern literature and her enduring spirit. A private family funeral will be followed by a public thanksgiving service later this year.

As the nation mourns, one thing feels certain: no one wrote about love, lust, and class quite like Jilly Cooper. With her trademark sparkle and irrepressible humour, she made readers laugh, blush, and dream — and her words will live on forever in the pages of RidersRivals, and beyond.
