As the visionary founder behind Mumble Forum—a rapidly growing community of over 2,000 women—and MHouse, her boutique agency specialising in luxury marketing and brand storytelling, Monique Hodgson has dedicated her career to creating spaces where women are celebrated, supported, and equipped to thrive.

Her work bridges the gap between community and commerce, purpose and prestige. In this exclusive 10 questions with interview, Monique Hodgson opens up about the inspirations behind her ventures, the importance of authentic connections, and the evolving landscape of luxury.

1. What inspired you to create this platform, and what do you think makes it so successful?

The inspiration for Mumble Forum came from my own experiences as a female entrepreneur navigating a male-dominated landscape. I saw a need for a supportive space where women could connect, collaborate, and empower each other.  The success of Mumble Forum lies in its authenticity; it’s a community built on trust and shared values.

2. Can you share a specific moment where networking changed the course of your career?

When we engage with people who are constantly learning, challenging themselves, and seeking improvement, we are more likely to adopt a growth mindset ourselves. The collective pursuit of growth creates an environment that encourages learning, innovation, and self-improvement, and can even become a catalyst for our own personal growth journey. One of many moments that stands out was when a member of Mumble Forum reached out for advice on launching her startup.

Through our networking events, she connected with a mentor who not only guided her through the initial stages but also introduced her to potential investors. Seeing her success unfold and knowing that Mumble Forum played a role in that journey reinforced my belief in the power of connection. Personally, I’ve experienced similar moments where a simple conversation at a networking event opened doors I never knew existed, proving that the right connections can truly change everything.

3. What advice would you give to someone looking to build their own network and make meaningful connections?

Most of us are familiar with the saying, “You are the average of the five people you surround yourself with.” Our social circles profoundly impact our personal growth and development.  A great place to start building your own network is by joining an existing community that aligns with your values, allowing you to find your unique circle within the larger community. Whether you call it a network, a collective, or a community, the important thing is to connect with those who uplift and motivate you.

My advice would be to start with authenticity. Seek out spaces where you can be yourself and connect with others on a genuine level. Attend events that resonate with your interests and values, and don’t hesitate to reach out to people you admire—most are more open to connecting than you might think. Additionally, be proactive in offering support to others; building a network is a two-way street. When you invest in others’ success, you’ll find that those relationships grow deeper and more meaningful over time.

4. What are some of the key trends you’re seeing in the luxury space today?

A significant trend in the luxury market is the shift towards building meaningful relationships with customers. Brands are moving away from traditional marketing and focusing on creating trusted circles of brand advocates through event hosting and direct-to-consumer interactions. A study by Event Marketer found that 84% of consumers value in-person experiences for brand engagement, highlighting the importance of authentic connections.

Personalisation is another key trend, with luxury brands leveraging data to tailor experiences that resonate with individual customers. McKinsey research indicates that personalisation can lead to a 10-15% increase in sales and a 20-30% boost in customer satisfaction.

At MHouse, we specialise in community building and storytelling, helping our clients forge emotional connections with their audiences. By crafting compelling narratives, we enable brands to create loyal advocates. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability and ethical practices is vital, as modern luxury consumers increasingly prioritise brands that reflect their values.

5. What’s the biggest mistake you see brands making when trying to position themselves in the luxury market, and how can they correct it?

One of the biggest mistakes I see is brands failing to genuinely understand their target audience. Luxury consumers are not a monolith; they have diverse backgrounds, preferences, and values. Brands must invest time in research and engage with their audience to create authentic connections. To correct this, brands should prioritise storytelling that resonates with their audience’s values, rather than relying solely on traditional notions of exclusivity. Building a brand narrative that reflects authenticity and purpose will create a more meaningful relationship with consumers.

6. How do you balance exclusivity and inclusivity in your work?

Balancing exclusivity and inclusivity is about redefining what luxury means. I believe luxury should be accessible in terms of experience and values, not just price. In my work, I focus on creating experiences that invite diverse voices into the conversation while still offering the high-quality products and services that define luxury. By fostering a sense of community among consumers, brands can create a more inclusive narrative that resonates deeply with a broader audience, ultimately enriching the luxury experience.

7. What was the turning point for you, and how did that transformation shape your career?

The turning point for me came when I realised the power of mindset. I had been focusing on obstacles rather than opportunities, which was holding me back. Once I shifted my perspective to embrace challenges as stepping stones, I began to see possibilities everywhere. This transformation not only shaped my approach to business but also inspired me to create a supportive community for others. It reinforced my belief that positivity can drive success and that by uplifting one another, we can all thrive.

8. As a busy entrepreneur juggling multiple roles, how do you manage your time and maintain a sense of balance?

Navigating the demands of being a mother and an entrepreneur can often feel like a juggling act, but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences. I focus on self-care and set clear boundaries to ensure I can give my best to both my family and my work. For me, the idea of balance isn’t about achieving perfection; it’s about embracing different seasons of life, where I can compartmentalise, delegate, and stay flexible. This is why I believe mothers often make the best entrepreneurs.

Managing time effectively starts with setting clear priorities, but I also allow flexibility for unexpected opportunities. I find that maintaining balance is less about perfection and more about being intentional with my time. It’s often said that it takes a village, and I wholeheartedly believe that reclaiming that village mentality is crucial. Delegate and finding support in connecting with others who share similar goals and values, we can navigate the complexities of our lives with greater confidence and strength.

9. What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received, and how has it influenced your journey?

The best piece of advice I ever received was to “stay curious.” This mindset has profoundly influenced my journey. It encourages me to embrace learning and exploration, not just in my business but in every area of life. By staying curious, I’ve been able to adapt to changing landscapes, innovate in my work, and foster connections that enrich my community. It’s a reminder that growth comes from being open to new ideas and experiences.

10. What are the biggest challenges women face in business today, and how can they overcome them?

As someone who has navigated the entrepreneurial landscape, I’ve witnessed significant systemic challenges that female entrepreneurs face. Women continue to navigate a landscape troubled with encounters, from limited access to funding to enduring societal biases that can undermine our confidence. To transcend these hurdles, we must embrace a transformative mindset. As we ascend in our careers, it’s our duty to uplift the women around us, fostering a collective sense of empowerment.

Building robust networks through mentorship and community engagement is essential. These connections not only provide invaluable support but also reinforce the idea that our successes are interconnected. When one woman rises, we all rise. Advocating for ourselves is equally crucial. Cultivating the confidence to articulate our worth and negotiate for what we deserve is essential for dismantling the barriers that persist in the business world.

I believe we must actively challenge the stereotypes that linger by sharing our narratives and celebrating our achievements. Real change is a collaborative effort; it cannot be achieved in isolation. By championing one another and recognising the strength in our diversity, we can pave the way for a more inclusive future in business. and drive systemic change.
