Known for its warm colour pallet, 70’s fashion is perfect for the autumn/winter season. Its versatility in layering and variety in textures allows you to dress your outfit up or down depending on the weather. Though many everyday clothing pieces are loose, flowy and carefree, we can look to party and workwear to create more sophisticated and formal looks. How to wear 70’s Fashion

Think about your colour palettes when creating your outfits can give off a retro, 70’s fashion vibe. Browns, rusts and oranges go perfectly together. Dark mulberry and navy colours are perfect during winter. Adding fabrics like suede, corduroy, lace, crochet and leather is a great way to add 70’s style to your everyday wardrobe. 

Co-ords & Corduroy

Matching, and coordinating sets were big in the 70s. And with so many choices, creating a matching outfit for any occasion was so easy! A pantsuit, with a matching blazer and trousers in pinstripes, tartan or tweed. The same goes for matching your trousers, waistcoat, or skirt and blazer. This will create a put-together, professional and cohesive-looking outfit. For those with early morning starts, this is the perfect, easy go-to outfit.

Denim

Try double denim! We were told it was a crime, but by matching the exact denim colour it’s a crime how good it looks. Flared jeans matched with a denim jacket and a crochet top are the perfect combination. Add some black heeled boots and you’re ready to go. 

Jumpsuits

Like the coordinating sets, a jumpsuit is such an easy outfit to style, yet looks so good. For a classic 70s look try flared denim jumpsuits. Vibrant printed jumpsuits nod to the 70s disco style. For colder days, a short-sleeved jumpsuit looks perfect with a turtleneck paired underneath. A brown belt accessorised can also aid in breaking up the outfit. Comfy and practical, the jumpsuit can be dressed up or down for any occasion.

Scarves are an autumn/winter staple, perfect for layering and keeping you warm. To put a 70’s style spin on this item, try printed silk scarves. Wear as a headband, top, skirt or on your handbag, it will put a retro spin on any outfit. This was a key item in the hippie movement, and can easily be found in charity and vintage shops in so many different colours and designs. 

Knee-High Boots

Footwear is often an accessory that gets forgotten about. But telling a story with your outfit from head to toe is important. Knee-high boots were a go-to shoe in the 70s. They are perfect for the autumn/winter season, keeping your legs extra warm when wearing a dress or skirt. The most common style was a sleek, heeled boot.

However, we predict that a brown boot will be the new wardrobe staple. Whatever colour, material and heel height you choose, a long boot will add a retro vibe to any outfit. And has the knee-high boot ever really gone out of style?

Flower Power 

Perhaps the most iconic symbol of 70’s fashion is the classic flower power print. Associated with the hippie movement, you may remember this print as being flashy and neon. However, more dainty florals in warm colour tones like browns and oranges allow for a more toned-down look, perfect for these colder months.

A floral, collared dress paired with a pair of tights and black shoes would look perfect. The floral print would also look great on shirts, skirts, and if you’re feeling adventurous, as a patterned pair of tights. Florals aren’t just for spring and summer!

Fringe Trim

If in doubt add some fringe. Almost every vintage shop will have something fringe trimmed. A staple piece in any wardrobe, it instantly adds that 70’s style vibe without trying too hard. A fringed bag or jacket is the easiest way to add some glam rock to an everyday-looking outfit. It certainly looks effortlessly chic.
