Jeans and a nice top: How it started.

In 1934, the first pair of women’s Levi’s jeans were welcomed into the female fashion market and were originally worn mostly by women on ranches in America. Soon they became the coolest Hollywood fashion trend thanks to movie stars such as Marilyn Monroe in Clash By Night in 1952.

By the 1950s, jeans were becoming a staple for many women’s wardrobes in the western world, styling straight-leg blue jeans with button-up shirts, checked blouses, and a simple white t-shirt. Jeans and a plain white t-shirt quickly became a classic look for women. The simplicity and classiness of this outfit were what caused such popularity- it is faultless.

As the years and decades went by, new ways to enhance the ‘jeans and a nice top’ combo were progressing, with boot-cut jeans in the 60s and 70s being styled with high neck knit jumpers and long sleeve stripey tops being loved by famous fashion icons and so influencing many of us to love and buy these trends too.

By the 1980s, the number of denim styles, shapes and textures had excelled. Patchwork, black and white jeans had all propelled into the fashion scene- especially black jeans which were a ground-breaking never-been-worn-before trend. Black jeans have become the perfect smart, but not too smart item to match with any style of the top as they can make any outfit look neat and classy.

They have become a staple for a casual but stylish night out look; throw them on with literally anything, a pair of heels or boots and a statement bag and your night out outfit is complete. But these were not just temporary trends- they were cemented as timeless wardrobe pieces up to this very day.

Princess Diana was one of the pioneers of making jeans acceptable and casual in the 1980s too, wearing them with sporty sweatshirts and blazers, mixing class and athleisure. The 1990s and 2000s saw the widespread adoption of jeans into everyday wardrobes, with low-waisted and light wash being a necessity.

In 2022, however, the sheer number of jean types and top styles cannot even be counted. Jeans can be ripped, embroidered, patchworked, dyed, bleached, acid-washed or bedazzled and so the style of jeans you wear today can be even more suited to the event or occasion you are attending.
